One-Legged Upward Bow Pose Eka Pada Urdhva Dhanurasana

The wheel with one leg lifted straight toward the ceiling, the arch held on two hands and one foot; held for time, a balance on top of a deep backbend.

How to do it

Setup

In the wheel pose, arms straight, feet parallel and hip-width apart, the weight spread evenly.

Steps

  1. Shift the weight onto one foot and the hands.
  2. Lift the other leg straight up toward the ceiling, hips level, and hold.
  3. Lower the foot beside the other, then come down as from the wheel.

Common mistakes

Hips dropping on the lifted side: press the standing foot down and keep the pelvis level. Standing knee falling out: keep it over the foot. Kicking the leg up: lift it slowly once the arch is steady.

Breathing

Slow and even through the hold.
