Cable Seated Reverse Shrug

The opposite of a shrug at the lat pulldown: with a wide grip and straight arms, draw the shoulders down away from the ears; the bar barely moves.

How to do it

Setup

Seated with the thighs under the pads, the lat bar held wide overhand near its ends, arms straight, shoulders up by the ears.

Steps

  1. Pull the shoulders down away from the ears, arms staying straight.
  2. Hold the low point for a beat, chest tall.
  3. Let the shoulders rise back up slowly.

Common mistakes

Grip creeping toward the middle: hold the bar near its ends; the wide grip is this variant. Shrugging back up fast between reps: let the shoulders rise under control. Arching the lower back to fake the pull: ribs down; only the shoulder blades move.

Breathing

Exhale drawing the shoulders down, inhale releasing.
