Bodyweight Forward Lunge (Hinge at Hips)

The forward lunge with the torso hinged over the front thigh; the lean moves the work from the knee toward the glute.

How to do it

Setup

Standing, feet hip-width, arms hanging.

Steps

  1. Step forward, hinging the chest over the front thigh.
  2. Back flat, front shin near vertical.
  3. Drive through the front heel to stand; alternate.

Common mistakes

Lean made by rounding: fold at the hips with a flat back. Short step: the lean needs room; step long. Standing up with a swing of the chest: the front heel pushes you back.

Breathing

Inhale stepping in, exhale pushing back.
