Barbell Wide-Grip Upright Row

The upright row with the hands set wide; the elbows travel out to the sides, easier on the wrists and shoulders than a narrow grip.

How to do it

Setup

Bar at the thighs, overhand grip well outside the shoulders, standing tall.

Steps

  1. Pull the bar up along the body, elbows leading out wide.
  2. Stop with the elbows at shoulder height.
  3. Lower along the body to straight arms.

Common mistakes

Grip creeping narrower: set the hands wide and keep them there. Elbows climbing past shoulder height: the top of the shoulder gets crowded; stop level. Heaving the bar with the hips: stand still; lighter bar.

Breathing

Exhale on the pull, inhale lowering.
