Barbell Lying Close-Grip Underhand Row on Rack

The barbell seal row with a close underhand grip; the elbows stay tight to the body and the biceps take a bigger share of the pull.

How to do it

Setup

Face down on a bench set high on a rack, the bar below on long arms, hands close and underhand.

Steps

  1. Row the bar up until it touches the underside of the bench.
  2. Keep the elbows tight along the ribs.
  3. Lower to a dead hang with control.

Common mistakes

Elbows flaring out: the close underhand grip keeps them along the ribs; hold that line. Kicking the legs to finish: nothing but the back and arms move. Wrists bending back under the bar: keep them straight.

Breathing

Exhale on the row, inhale in the hang.
