Barbell Front Step-Up

The step-up with the bar racked on the front of the shoulders; the front load keeps the torso upright and asks more of the thighs.

How to do it

Setup

Bar racked on the front of the shoulders, elbows high, a step in front.

Steps

  1. Put the whole foot on the step and stand tall on it.
  2. Keep the elbows up so the bar stays on the shoulders.
  3. Step back down with control and alternate the lead leg.

Common mistakes

Elbows dropping: the bar rolls forward; drive them up. Torso folding over the step: stay upright under the bar. Landing heavily on the way down: step down, do not drop.

Breathing

Exhale stepping up, inhale down.
