Barbell One-Arm Side Deadlift

The suitcase deadlift with a barbell: the bar lies beside one foot, gripped at its middle in one hand, and you stand without leaning or letting the bar tip.

How to do it

Setup

Bar on the floor beside one foot, pointing front to back, one hand gripping its center; hips back, back flat, free arm out.

Steps

  1. Stand up with the bar at your side, shoulders level.
  2. Keep the bar balanced so neither end dips.
  3. Set it down the way it came up; next set, the other hand.

Common mistakes

Gripping off-center: the bar tips; find the balance point before lifting. Leaning away from the bar: the far side braces so the torso stays upright. Hiking the loaded shoulder: keep it down.

Breathing

Inhale at the bottom, exhale standing.
