Barbell Overhead Lunge

The forward lunge with a barbell locked out overhead on a wide grip; shoulders and trunk keep it still.

How to do it

Setup

Bar locked out overhead, grip wide, arms straight, feet hip-width.

Steps

  1. Step forward, bar over the back of the head.
  2. Lower the back knee, arms locked.
  3. Push back without the bar drifting forward.

Common mistakes

Bar drifting in front of the face: push it back over the crown and the heels. Elbows softening: lock them, or go lighter. Ribs flaring as the arms hold: brace so the lower back stays neutral.

Breathing

Inhale stepping in, exhale pushing back.
