Barbell Banded Sumo Deadlift

The sumo deadlift with bands from the bar to the floor; they stretch as you rise, so the lockout gets heavier than the break off the floor.

How to do it

Setup

Wide stance, toes out, a band from each side of the bar anchored at the floor; grip inside the knees.

Steps

  1. Wedge the hips down and break the bar off the floor.
  2. Keep pushing the knees out as the bands tighten.
  3. Squeeze the lockout, then control the bar down against the bands.

Common mistakes

Bands anchored off-center: they twist the bar; set equal tension on both sides. Letting the bands yank the bar down: lower it yourself. Easing off at the top: the bands peak there; finish hard.

Breathing

Big breath and brace before the pull, exhale after lockout.
