Wide Stance Thoracic Rotation

Hinged forward in a wide stance, one hand stays low while the other arm opens up to the ceiling; the upper back turns, the hips stay still.

How to do it

Setup

Feet wide, knees soft, hinged forward with a flat back, both hands hanging toward the floor.

Steps

  1. Turn the chest and reach one arm up toward the ceiling.
  2. Keep the other hand low and the hips square.
  3. Bring the arm down and open to the other side.

Common mistakes

Hips rotating with the arm: they stay square; the turn is in the upper back. Rounding the lower back in the hinge: keep it flat and bend the knees more. Throwing the arm up: open it slowly as far as the chest turns.

Breathing

Exhale opening up, inhale returning.
