Transverse Plane Dumbbell Lunge

A dumbbell lunge with a quarter turn: pivot on one foot and step the other out to the side, the hips turning with it.

How to do it

Setup

Dumbbells at the sides, standing tall, feet hip-width.

Steps

  1. Pivot on one foot and step the other out a quarter turn.
  2. Sink into the lunge facing the new direction.
  3. Push back to the start and repeat to the other side.

Common mistakes

Knee twisting over a planted foot: pivot the foot so knee and toes turn together. Bells swinging with the turn: keep them close. Short step: reach far enough to truly lunge.

Breathing

Inhale on the step, exhale pushing back.
