Transverse Step-Up
The step-up that starts side-on to the bench: the hips turn a quarter toward it as the near foot steps up, adding a rotation to the climb.
How to do it
Setup
Standing side-on to a flat bench, a step away, hands on the hips.
Steps
- Turn the hips toward the bench and set the near foot on it.
- Stand up on the bench through that leg.
- Step back down and turn back to side-on; alternate sides.
Common mistakes
Twisting on a planted knee: let the far foot pivot so the turn comes from the hips. Foot landing half on the bench: place it whole. Turning with a rounded back: rotate the whole trunk with the hips, chest up.
Breathing
Exhale stepping up, inhale down.
