Sumo Squat

Feet wide with the toes turned out; the wide stance brings the inner thigh into the squat.

Sumo Squat, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Wide stance, toes out ~45°, hands at the chest or hanging.

Steps

  1. Squat straight down between the legs.
  2. Knees tracking over the toes the whole way.
  3. Squeeze the inner thighs and glutes to stand.

Common mistakes

Torso tipping forward: the wide stance wants a vertical drop; sit down, not back. Knees rolling in: the stance is lost; push them out hard. Too narrow: sumo means WIDE.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale up.
