Standing Straight-Leg Hamstring Contract-Relax on Stability Ball

Heel on a stability ball and the leg straight, press the heel down into the ball, then relax and lean a little deeper; a contract-relax stretch.

How to do it

Setup

Standing, one heel on a stability ball in front, that leg straight, a hand on a support.

Steps

  1. Hinge forward from the hips until the back of the thigh stretches.
  2. Press the heel down into the ball gently for a few breaths.
  3. Relax, then lean a little further into the new stretch.
  4. Repeat the cycle, then switch legs.

Common mistakes

Pressing the heel down with full force: half effort is plenty. Rounding the back to go deeper: the hinge comes from the hips. Letting the ball roll away: steady yourself on a support and keep it still.

Breathing

Breathe through the press; exhale as you lean deeper.
