Standing Hip Flexor Stretch

A standing lunge with the front foot up on a box and the back heel raised; pushing the hips forward opens the front of the back hip.

How to do it

Setup

Standing tall, one foot flat on a box ahead, the back leg long on the ball of the foot, hands on the front knee.

Steps

  1. Tip the pelvis under so the lower back stays flat.
  2. Shift the hips forward over the front foot until the back hip stretches.
  3. Hold and breathe, then switch legs.

Common mistakes

Arching the lower back to go further: keep the pelvis tipped under and the ribs down. Front knee pushing past the toes: set the box or the back foot farther away. Leaning the chest forward: stay upright over the hips.

Breathing

Slow and even through the hold.
