Smith Machine Sumo Deadlift

The sumo deadlift on the Smith machine's rails; with the bar path fixed, the wide stance and the hip drive are the whole job.

How to do it

Setup

Bar low on the rails over the mid-foot, wide stance, toes out, grip inside the knees, back flat.

Steps

  1. Turn the bar off the hooks and drive the floor apart.
  2. Stand tall as the bar rides up the rails.
  3. Lower along the rails and hook the bar after the set.

Common mistakes

Feet placed so the rails pull the bar away from the shins: set up with the bar over the mid-foot. Knees caving in the wide stance: push them out. Leaving the bar unhooked between sets: hook it standing tall, after the lockout.

Breathing

Big breath and brace before the pull, exhale after lockout.
