Barbell Weighted Chains Sumo Deadlift

The sumo deadlift with chains hung over the bar sleeves; link by link they lift off the floor, so the bar grows heavier toward lockout.

How to do it

Setup

Chains draped over both sleeves and piled on the floor; wide stance, toes out, grip inside the knees.

Steps

  1. Pull the slack out and push the floor apart.
  2. Keep driving as the chains come off the floor.
  3. Lock out, then lower until the chains pile back down.

Common mistakes

Chains uneven on the two sides: the bar tilts; hang the same length each side. Slowing down as the chains load up: keep the drive through the top. Chains swinging into the legs: hang them on the sleeves, clear of the stance.

Breathing

Big breath and brace before the pull, exhale after lockout.
