Barbell Sumo Deadlift from Blocks

The sumo deadlift with the plates on blocks: the wide stance and the raised start leave a short pull that is mostly lockout.

How to do it

Setup

Wide stance, toes out, plates on blocks, hands on the bar inside the knees, chest up, back flat.

Steps

  1. Spread the knees out over the toes and pull the slack from the bar.
  2. Push the floor apart and stand, bar close to the body.
  3. Lower the bar to the blocks along the same path.

Common mistakes

Knees caving in the wide stance: drive them out. Hips shooting up first: the chest rises with them. Setting the bar down off-center: it rolls off the blocks; lower it straight.

Breathing

Brace before each pull, exhale at lockout.
