Smith Machine Front Squat

The front squat under a Smith bar held with crossed arms; the fixed track helps the torso stay upright.

How to do it

Setup

Bar across the front of the shoulders, arms crossed over it, feet slightly forward.

Steps

  1. Turn the bar off the hooks, elbows high.
  2. Squat until the thighs pass parallel.
  3. Drive up, then turn the bar back onto the hooks.

Common mistakes

Elbows dropping: the bar rolls toward the hands; keep them up. Feet straight under the bar: the knees jam; set them a little forward. Unracking with a loose trunk: brace first.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale up.
