Single-Arm Cable Row

One handle at a time, letting the shoulder reach forward at the start and pulling the elbow past the ribs.

Single-Arm Cable Row, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Seated or staggered at a low pulley, one handle, arm long.

Steps

  1. Let the shoulder reach forward at the start.
  2. Row the handle to the ribs, blade sweeping back.
  3. Return long, shoulder reaching again.

Common mistakes

Skipping the forward reach: the extra stretch is the variant's gift. Rotating the torso: square shoulders, the blade moves. Jerky pulls: the cable rewards smooth.

Breathing

Exhale on the row, inhale on the reach.
