Peacock Pose Mayurasana

An arm balance on the palms with the fingers turned back and the elbows pressed into the belly, the whole body held level with the floor.

How to do it

Setup

Kneeling, palms on the floor with the fingers pointing back toward the knees, elbows close together and bent.

Steps

  1. Rest the belly on the elbows and stretch the legs back, toes on the floor.
  2. Shift the weight forward over the hands until the feet float up.
  3. Hold the body level and breathe, then lower the feet to come out.

Common mistakes

Pitching forward onto the face: shift the weight slowly and keep a cushion in front. Sharp pain where the elbows press the belly: move them until it is only pressure. Wrists aching in the hold: come down and build up with shorter holds.

Breathing

Steady throughout; never held.
