Barbell Stiff-Leg Good Morning
The good morning with the knees kept nearly straight; the hinge stops sooner and the stretch in the backs of the legs arrives earlier than with soft knees.
How to do it
Setup
Bar on the upper back as for a squat, feet hip-width, knees almost locked but not jammed.
Steps
- Push the hips back, folding the torso forward with the back flat.
- Stop where the hamstrings pull tight, well above parallel if need be.
- Drive the hips forward to stand, knees still nearly straight.
Common mistakes
Rounding the back to fold deeper: the stretch sets the bottom, not the floor. Knees bending as you tire: that turns it into the soft-knee good morning; keep them long or lighten the bar. Bar rolling up the neck: set it on the upper back and grip it tight.
Breathing
Inhale hinging, exhale standing.
