Overhead Squat, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Bar locked out overhead in a wide snatch grip, feet shoulder-width, armpits turned forward.

Steps

  1. Squat to full depth keeping the bar over the middle of the foot.
  2. Push up into the bar the whole way down and up.
  3. Drive up through the whole foot.

Common mistakes

Bar drifting forward: the shoulders stop pushing; press up into it and keep the chest tall. Heels rising: the stance is too narrow or the ankles too stiff; widen the feet, turn the toes out. Going heavy before the position is there: this squat is a mobility test first; an empty bar is a full workout.

Breathing

Big breath at the top, exhale past the sticking point.
