Lying Triceps Extension

Lying down, lower the bar toward the forehead by bending the elbows, then extend the arms; upper arms stay vertical.

Lying Triceps Extension, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

On the bench, bar over the chest, grip inside shoulder-width, elbows in.

Steps

  1. Bend the elbows, lowering the bar toward the forehead.
  2. Keep the upper arms vertical and still.
  3. Extend back to lockout over the chest.

Common mistakes

Elbows flaring wide: the triceps unload; keep them in. Upper arms drifting toward the head: that turns it into a pullover; vertical and frozen. Bouncing off the forehead: the nickname is a warning, not a technique.

Breathing

Inhale lowering, exhale extending.
