Dumbbell Sumo Deadlift

The sumo deadlift with two dumbbells hanging between the legs; the bells travel straight down inside the knees.

How to do it

Setup

Wide stance, toes out, a dumbbell in each hand hanging between the legs, back flat, chest up.

Steps

  1. Sit the hips down and back until the bells near the floor.
  2. Drive up, pressing the knees out past the bells.
  3. Stand tall and squeeze the glutes.

Common mistakes

Bells swinging in front of the legs: they hang straight under the shoulders. Knees closing in on the bells: keep them spread wide. Rounding to touch the floor: go only as low as the flat back allows.

Breathing

Inhale at the bottom, exhale after lockout.
