Dumbbell Standing Front and Diagonal Raise

A dumbbell held by both heads is raised on straight arms twice in each rep: straight up in front to overhead, then diagonally up to one side.

How to do it

Setup

Standing, feet shoulder-width, one dumbbell held horizontally by both heads in front of the thighs.

Steps

  1. Raise the bell on straight arms in front of you to overhead, then lower it to the thighs.
  2. Raise it diagonally up and out to overhead on one side, letting the trunk turn a little.
  3. Lower it back to the thighs; take the next diagonal to the other side.

Common mistakes

Arching the lower back overhead: ribs down, a braced trunk. Bending the elbows on the diagonal: long arms all the way up. Swinging the bell from one lift into the next: stop at the thighs between them.

Breathing

Exhale on each raise, inhale lowering.
