Dumbbell Powell Raise
The Powell raise side-lying along a low bench, head on the lower arm: the top arm lifts the bell from below the bench's edge until it points straight up.
How to do it
Setup
Side-lying along a low bench, head resting on the lower arm, the bell hanging off the bench's front edge in the top hand.
Steps
- Lift the bell with a long arm until it points at the ceiling.
- Keep the body still; the shoulder does the lifting.
- Lower it below the edge of the bench under control; switch sides after the set.
Common mistakes
Swinging the bell up from the hang: start each rep from a dead stop below the bench. Turning onto the back as the arm rises: stay on the side. Bending the elbow near the top: finish with a straight arm over the shoulder.
Breathing
Exhale on the raise, inhale lowering.
