Close-Grip Pull-Up

The pull-up with the hands close together overhand; the narrow grip lengthens the pull and puts more of it on the arms.

How to do it

Setup

Hang from the bar with an overhand grip, hands a fist or two apart, arms straight.

Steps

  1. Pull the chest toward the hands, elbows forward and down.
  2. Bring the chin over the bar between the hands.
  3. Lower to a full hang under control.

Common mistakes

Wrists bending back on the narrow grip: keep them straight over the bar. Swinging to get the chin over: strict reps, fewer of them. Shortening the bottom: the narrow grip earns its range there; hang fully.

Breathing

Exhale on the pull, inhale lowering.
