Close-Grip Chin-Up

The chin-up with the hands close together on the bar, palms facing you; the elbows travel in front of the body instead of out to the sides.

How to do it

Setup

Dead hang, underhand grip with the hands a fist's width apart, arms straight, shoulders active.

Steps

  1. Draw the blades down to start the pull.
  2. Pull the chin over the bar, elbows close in front of the ribs.
  3. Lower to a full hang with control.

Common mistakes

Hands touching so the wrists twist: leave a fist's width between them. Elbows flaring out as the chin nears the bar: keep them in front of the body. Swinging the legs forward: a still hang and strict reps.

Breathing

Exhale on the pull, inhale lowering.
