Cheat Curl
A barbell curl started with a short hip drive to get the bar past the hardest point, then lowered slowly and strictly; for loads heavier than a strict curl allows.
How to do it
Setup
Standing, bar at the thighs, underhand grip at shoulder width, knees soft, trunk braced.
Steps
- Dip the knees and hips slightly, then drive them forward to start the bar moving.
- Finish the curl with the arms, the bar at the upper chest.
- Lower the bar slowly with no help from the body.
Common mistakes
Heaving with the lower back: the drive comes from the hips and knees; spine neutral. Dropping the bar after the heave: the slow lowering is the point of the cheat. Too much momentum: a small drive past the sticking point, no more.
Breathing
Exhale on the drive and curl, inhale lowering.
