Bodyweight Kneeling Hold to Stand

From kneeling on both knees, step one foot forward and stand up, then return down to both knees; a drill for getting up off the floor with control.

How to do it

Setup

Kneeling on a mat on both knees, torso upright, hands at the sides.

Steps

  1. Hold the tall kneel, then step one foot forward into a half-kneel.
  2. Drive through the front foot to stand up.
  3. Step back down to the half-kneel and then to both knees.

Common mistakes

Dropping onto the knee: lower it softly to the mat. Pushing up with the hands on the thigh: the front leg stands you up. Torso folding forward: stay tall through the whole transition.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale as you drive up.
