Belt Squat

The weight hangs from a belt at the hips instead of resting on the back; legs get loaded, the spine does not.

Belt Squat, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Weight hanging from the belt at the hips, feet on the platform shoulder-width.

Steps

  1. Squat deep – the load hangs, the spine stays empty.
  2. Torso taller than a back squat allows.
  3. Drive up through the whole foot.

Common mistakes

Leaning forward out of habit: nothing is on the back; stay tall. Shallow reps: the belt is WHY you can go deep; go. Belt riding the waist: it sits on the hips.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale up.
