Barbell Standing Wide Military Press

The standing military press with the hands well outside the shoulders; the bar travels a shorter path and the elbows open to the sides.

How to do it

Setup

Standing, feet hip-width, bar at the collarbones, grip a hand's width or more outside the shoulders.

Steps

  1. Press the bar up to lockout over the crown of the head.
  2. Keep the wrists stacked over the elbows all the way.
  3. Lower slowly to the collarbones.

Common mistakes

Grip so wide the shoulders pinch at the top: bring it in until the lockout is easy. Wrists bent back under the bar: stack them over the elbows. Pressing the bar out in front: finish it over the crown, not ahead of the face.

Breathing

Big breath before the press, exhale at lockout.
