Bodyweight Standing Military Press

The military press with empty hands: a warm-up that rehearses the path and the lockout before a loaded press.

How to do it

Setup

Standing, feet hip-width, hands at the shoulders with the palms forward, elbows under the wrists.

Steps

  1. Press the hands straight up until the arms lock beside the ears.
  2. Reach tall at the top without shrugging.
  3. Bring the hands back to the shoulders, elbows under the wrists.

Common mistakes

Rushing the reps: move at the speed of a loaded press; the path is the point. Shoulders hiking up to the ears: reach tall and keep the neck long. Hands finishing in front of the face: lock out over the shoulders.

Breathing

Exhale on the press, inhale lowering.
