Barbell Standing Shoulder Pin Press

The standing press started from the rack's safety pins at shoulder height: every rep begins from a dead stop, with no lowering to bounce out of.

How to do it

Setup

Pins set at collarbone height with the bar on them; stand under it, grip just wider than the shoulders, glutes and abs braced.

Steps

  1. Set the glutes and abs, then push the bar up off the pins.
  2. Press it straight up to lockout, the head moving out of its way.
  3. Set the bar down on the pins and pause before the next press.

Common mistakes

Tapping the pins and going again: a full stop, the bar resting, every rep. Pins set below the collarbones: the start should match the bottom of your own press. Leaning back to break the bar off the pins: brace and press straight up.

Breathing

Big breath before the press, exhale at lockout.
