Barbell Standing Twist
The standing barbell twist: feet planted and knees soft, a light bar on the upper back turns slowly from one side to the other while the hips face forward.
How to do it
Setup
Standing, feet shoulder-width, knees soft, a light bar across the upper back with a wide grip.
Steps
- Turn the shoulders to one side while the knees and hips point ahead.
- Stop at the end of an easy turn, with no bounce.
- Turn back through the middle to the other side.
Common mistakes
Whipping the bar around: the ends fly past the stop and wrench the spine; turn slowly. Knees turning with the bar: keep them pointing ahead. Loading the bar heavy: the twist is control work; keep it light.
Breathing
Exhale on each twist, inhale through the middle.
