Barbell Standing Close-Grip Military Press

The standing military press with the hands about shoulder-width or just inside; the elbows stay in front and the triceps take more of the press.

How to do it

Setup

Standing, feet hip-width, bar at the collarbones, hands about shoulder-width, elbows under the bar.

Steps

  1. Drive the bar up past the face, elbows in front of it.
  2. Lock out with the bar over the middle of the feet.
  3. Lower to the collarbones, elbows still forward.

Common mistakes

Hands so close the wrists bend back: shoulder-width is narrow enough. Elbows flaring out to the sides: keep them forward, under the bar. Pushing the hips forward to finish: squeeze the glutes and keep the torso upright.

Breathing

Big breath before the press, exhale at lockout.
