Barbell Single-Leg Squat

A single-leg squat under a bar on the back, the free knee bent behind and lowering toward the floor, skater-squat style.

How to do it

Setup

Bar on the upper back, standing on one leg, the other knee bent so the foot floats behind.

Steps

  1. Bend the standing knee, leaning the torso slightly forward.
  2. Lower until the back knee nears the floor.
  3. Drive up through the whole foot, keeping the bar level.

Common mistakes

Back knee slamming the floor: stop a hand's width above it. Bar tipping toward the free side: brace and keep it level. Starting too heavy for one leg: the bar must balance over one foot; begin light.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale up.
