Barbell Squat to Shoulder Press

A front squat, then a strict press from the shoulders once standing; the bar stops in the rack between the two, which sets it apart from a thruster.

How to do it

Setup

Bar in the front rack on the shoulders, hands just outside them, feet shoulder-width.

Steps

  1. Front squat to parallel, elbows high.
  2. Stand up and settle the bar on the shoulders.
  3. Press it overhead, then lower it to the shoulders.

Common mistakes

Rolling the squat straight into the press: pause in the rack; this is not a thruster. Leaning back to finish the press: brace the trunk and squeeze the glutes. Pressing the bar around the face: pull the head back briefly and press straight up.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale standing, then again on the press.
