Barbell Squat to Upright Row

A squat with the bar hanging at arm's length, then an upright row to the chin once standing; the legs and the shoulders work in turn.

How to do it

Setup

Bar held overhand at arm's length in front of the thighs, hands and feet about shoulder-width.

Steps

  1. Squat down, the bar lowering straight in front of the shins.
  2. Stand up and pull the bar to the chin, elbows leading high.
  3. Lower the bar to the thighs before the next squat.

Common mistakes

Pulling while still rising: stand first, then row. Wrists above the elbows at the top: the elbows lead and finish highest. Rounding forward in the squat to reach the bar low: keep the chest up and the bar close.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale standing, then again on the row.
