Barbell Incline Wide Reverse-Grip Bench Press

The incline bench press with a wide underhand grip; the palms face the head and the elbows stay in.

How to do it

Setup

Bench at 30–45°, hands wider than the shoulders, palms toward the face, thumbs wrapped.

Steps

  1. Take the bar from a spotter and hold it over the upper chest.
  2. Lower to the top of the chest, elbows pointing down, not out.
  3. Press up and slightly back to straight arms.

Common mistakes

Thumbs left open on the wide underhand grip: the bar slides toward the fingers; wrap them. Wrists folding back: keep them over the forearms. Unracking alone: the reverse grip is weakest there; have it handed out.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale on the press.
