Barbell Close-Grip Larsen Press

The Larsen press with a close grip: legs straight out and off the floor, hands about shoulder-width, so the triceps finish each press without help from the legs.

How to do it

Setup

On a flat bench in a rack, safeties just below chest height, grip about shoulder-width, legs straight and lifted off the floor.

Steps

  1. Lower the bar to the lower chest, elbows brushing the body.
  2. Keep the legs hovering and the hips still.
  3. Press to lockout, finishing with the triceps.

Common mistakes

Hands too close: shoulder-width is narrow enough and spares the wrists. Elbows flaring wide: keep them tucked along the ribs. Body shifting on the bench as the bar comes down: brace before each rep.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale pressing.
