Backhand Raise

Hinged a little at the hips, sweep both straight arms from hanging back behind the body, palms facing back; the shoulders extend and the blades draw together.

How to do it

Setup

Standing, knees soft, hinged slightly forward with a flat back, arms hanging straight, palms facing back.

Steps

  1. Sweep both straight arms back and up behind the body.
  2. Squeeze the shoulder blades together at the top.
  3. Lower the arms slowly to hanging.

Common mistakes

Bending the elbows to swing higher: the arms stay straight; the range is small. Rocking the torso to help: hold the hinge still. Shrugging at the top: shoulders down, blades back.

Breathing

Exhale raising, inhale lowering.
