Thumb Abduction

Hands flat on a table, each thumb slides out away from the index finger and back, a small drill for the muscles that open the thumb.

How to do it

Setup

Kneeling or standing at a table, both hands flat on its top, fingers together, thumbs alongside the index fingers.

Steps

  1. Slide the thumb out away from the index finger as far as it goes.
  2. Hold the open position for a beat.
  3. Bring it back alongside the finger.

Common mistakes

Lifting the hand off the table: the palm stays flat; only the thumb moves. Spreading the other fingers too: keep them together. Forcing past the comfortable end: stop where the thumb stops.

Breathing

Steady throughout; never held.
