Smith Machine Decline Reverse-Grip Press

The decline press in the Smith machine with the bar held underhand; the reverse grip keeps the elbows tucked and the fixed path holds the bar steady head-down.

How to do it

Setup

Decline bench under the Smith bar, legs locked, underhand grip about shoulder-width, bar path over the lower chest.

Steps

  1. Unhook the bar and lower it to the lower chest, elbows close.
  2. Touch lightly, wrists straight under the bar.
  3. Press to lockout and turn the bar back onto the hooks.

Common mistakes

Thumbs off the bar with an underhand grip: wrap them around it. Wrists folding back: keep them stacked under the bar. Bench misplaced under the rails: set it so the bar lands on the lower chest.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale pressing.
