Lower Trunk Flexor Stretch

Lying on the back with the arms stretched overhead, arch the back to lift the chest and the ribs off the floor; the front of the trunk lengthens.

How to do it

Setup

Lying on the back, legs long and together, arms stretched overhead on the floor.

Steps

  1. Arch the back gently, lifting the chest toward the ceiling.
  2. Keep the buttocks and the head on the floor.
  3. Hold, then lower the back slowly.

Common mistakes

Cranking the arch as high as it goes: a moderate curve; the lower back must never pinch. Pushing through the head: it only rests; the chest does the lifting. Arms leaving the floor: keep them long and heavy overhead.

Breathing

Inhale lifting the chest, exhale lowering.
