Elevated Single-Leg Squat

The pistol squat done on top of a box, arms reaching forward; the free leg hangs past the edge instead of being held up off the floor.

How to do it

Setup

Standing on one leg on a box, the free foot off the edge, arms straight ahead.

Steps

  1. Sit back and down on the standing leg, arms reaching forward to balance.
  2. Let the free leg drop below the top of the box as the hips sink.
  3. Stand up through the whole foot, heel down.

Common mistakes

Arms dropping at the bottom: they are the counterweight; keep them reaching forward. Knee diving forward and inward: track it over the second toe. Dropping fast into the bottom: lower under control, the edge is close.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale up.
