Dumbbell Straight-Arm Twisting Sit-Up

The sit-up with one dumbbell held by its ends on straight arms, the torso turning as it rises so the bell finishes over one shoulder; sides alternate.

How to do it

Setup

Lying back, knees soft, a dumbbell gripped by its ends in both hands, arms straight up from the shoulders.

Steps

  1. Sit up and turn the torso, carrying the bell up past one shoulder.
  2. Keep the elbows locked and the heels down.
  3. Roll back down through the middle; turn the other way next rep.

Common mistakes

Turning only the arms: the ribs and shoulders turn with the bell. Hips rolling off the floor with the twist: keep them square. Swinging the bell to one side for momentum: turn at the speed you rise.

Breathing

Exhale on each twist, inhale returning.
