Dumbbell Lateral Lunge

The lateral lunge with a dumbbell in each hand; the bells hang on either side of the bent knee as the hips sit back.

How to do it

Setup

Feet together, a dumbbell hanging in each hand at the sides.

Steps

  1. Step out wide and sink the hips back over the stepping foot.
  2. Let the bells hang either side of that knee.
  3. Drive back to standing and repeat to the other side.

Common mistakes

Bells banging the knee: let them hang in front of and behind it. Chest collapsing onto the thigh: keep it lifted. Pushing back with the straight leg: the bent leg brings you back.

Breathing

Inhale into the lunge, exhale pushing back.
