Barbell Step-Up

Bar on the back: step onto the box with the whole foot and stand up through that leg without pushing off the floor; finish the set on one leg, then switch.

Barbell Step-Up, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Bar on the upper back, whole working foot on a knee-height box.

Steps

  1. Drive through the top foot to stand on the box.
  2. Touch the other foot lightly and step back down.
  3. Finish the set on one leg, then switch.

Common mistakes

Bouncing off the floor leg: the bar makes cheating tempting; the top leg lifts. Torso folding under the bar: tall chest, the bar over the mid-foot. Knee caving: track the toes.

Breathing

Exhale stepping up, inhale down.
